Upcoming Colder Weather and frozen pipes

9/23/2022 (Permalink)

photo of pipe with water flowing out Pipe with water flowing out

As of this date on September 23rd of 2022 in SE the temperatures are reminding us more of the weather that’s ahead. On arrival to the office the outside temperature was 42 degrees. Just 11 more degrees and water begins to freeze. The crisp air reminded me that we inch closer and closer to snow, ice, and a cold winter.

After cold weather persists day in and day out in the negative temperatures usually in the months of January and February pipes are most susceptible to freeze, causing them to burst. It only takes exposed pipes to be in temperatures of 20 degrees for a few hours before they can freeze and burst. Most of us can remember when ice storms hit Texas and being that Texas doesn’t experience cold temperatures pipes burst everywhere and caused nearly 10.3 BILLION dollars of damage.

As you can see frozen pipes are no joke so you may be asking what can I do to prevent this in my home?

First off you can let water drip from the faucet. Keeping water running through the pipes will help them prevent freezing. Another thing that will help prevent this is keeping garage doors closed if there are water supply lines that run through the garage. Next up, if you are going away to chase warmer weather during the winter months, be sure to keep the heat on in your home. You can also insulate your pipes. Although this may be slightly more costly than the other options it will be much less expensive that a water loss caused by a burst pipe.

With National Preparedness month being this month, we hope this gave you useful information to be prepared for the inevitable cold weather that is coming.

Wisconsin Storms 9/11

Flooded Ditch and Roadway Photo taken by the Caledonia PD of a flooded ditch showcasing the amount of rainfall

Yesterday rainfall records were broken. Our neighbors just to the north in Racine received a large amount of rain causing roadways, ditches, and basements alike to flood. Approximate rainfall amounts go as follows: Milwaukee 4.5” – Racine 8” – Kenosha 3” – East Troy 6”. As of today, many SE Wisconsinites are waking up with water in their basement. We have reports of up to 6” of standing water in basements.

So, what do you do if you woke up this morning or noticed last nigh that water was filling your basement? The first steps are to make safety a priority. Never step into a flooded basement where water may be in contact with electrical outlets, cords, or appliances. The water could be electrified and could be deadly if you step foot into. Although it may be tempting to begin to grab a bucket or a shop vac and begin removing the water, exercise caution before doing so, if at all.

Your next step would be to stabilize your basement and remove the water. This is where SERVPRO of South Kenosha County is able to help. You most likely need a professional restoration company to come and extract the water and set industrial grade dehumidifiers to begin the dryout process. This is the first steps to prevent further damage and mold growth. Here at SERVPRO of South Kenosha County we are equipped and ready with industrial grade dehumidifiers and air movers along with IICRC Certified Techs to professionally dry out your structure. We are all about DIY projects but unfortunately this isn’t one to try to do it yourself. If your structure isn’t dried out completely and professionally you are susceptible to microbial growth which is another dangerous health concern.

Ultimately, we want to help you get your home or business back up and running. We specialize in making it “Like it never even happened” to any water, fire, mold, biohazard, etc damage to your property. Don’t hesitate to give a professional restoration company a call. SERVPRO of South Kenosha County is here to help!

What to do in case of a flood

8/25/2022 (Permalink)

With the June being the rainiest month here in SE Wisconsin we are past the most susceptible time for a flood to occur until we reach spring next year when the snow melts and April showers begin. But still millions of people across the United States will experience a flood in their home. Whether it be from a sump pump failure, faulty foundation, improper drainage, supply line leak/break there are some steps that need to be taken to restore your home or commercial property back to its original condition.

So, what are the steps that you should take when you experience a flood? We know DIY projects are all the rave now, but when it comes to water damage DIY isn’t your best option. If you find that a supply line is leaking, your first step would be to stop the leak. You can commonly find the water shut off valve near the water heater. This is one thing in your home that you should familiarize yourself with. If it’s safe, use this main shutoff or find a shut off valve at the source and cut off the water supply from the source of the leak.

Your next step of action should be to remove the water from the affected area. This can be a daunting task and can be unsafe depending on what type of water is in your home. Check out our previous blog post on Types of Flood Water Contaminates for more information on that. What we find most common is that homeowners typically don’t have the means to remove water after a flood, and why should you. A flood is a disaster that you don’t expect to happen but here at SERVPRO of South Kenosha County we are prepared to deal with any disaster. We follow a strict 1-4-8 policy when a customer experiences a disaster. No matter what time of day a customer calls, we contact the customer within the 1st hour. Within 4 hours we are on site, and within 8  hours we have a scope of work for the customer. With that being said, we have the necessary tools to extract the water and determine what materials need to be dried in the structure. Without going to a disaster professional and trying the DIY route, you are leaving yourself susceptible to mold growth and even structural problems in your home which can lead to major health problems and safety concerns.

To summarize, we at SERVPRO of South Kenosha County can take care of your water damage. Our technicians are certified by the IICRC in Water Damage restoration and we want to give you ease of mind that your home is in the hands of one of the best restoration companies in the area. If water enters your home, give us a call at 262-332-7044.

2022 Storms and storm preparedness

8/3/2022 (Permalink)

photo of flooded basement Pictured is a basement which is flooded due to the Missouri storms

About 1 week ago torrential rains dropped a record breaking 9.07 inches of rain throughout the greater St. Louis area, as recorded by the St. Louis-Lambert International Airport. Approximately 8.64 inches of rain were recorded between midnight at 8am on the 26th of July. This caused an activation of SERVPRO’s Storm Team.

With SERVPRO Franchises stretching the country anytime torrential rains, hurricanes, large scale floods, etc. decide to plague the country SERVPRO is always ready to respond. SERVPRO of South Kenosha has proudly served as a part of the Storm Team. We dispatched a crew the following day of the St. Louis metro area storms to begin work immediately. We encountered basements with contents floating in water. We encountered large losses and small losses alike. With our work coming to an end this week. I believe our team deserves a special shoutout for recognition of being ready to drop everything on moment’s notice and help a community in need. Special thanks go out to Shawn, Robert, Leon, and Jay for traveling and working to mitigate the thousands of dollars caused by floods from the storm. Also, a special shout out to our office staff for helping manage the leads and things on the back end

Along with the St. Louis storms that caused flooding, another state in our great country also experienced devastating flooding. Last week Kentucky was hit with devastating floods with the total fatality count being at 37 souls at this time currently with hundreds of people still unaccounted for. Our condolences go out to all the families experiencing a loss because of this catastrophe. Although we have a previous blog mentioning tips on storm preparedness, I think the most important thing to remember in a time like this is having an emergency plan is a top priority for your home or business. Although there are many different variables that come in to play during emergency situations, having a general plan in place for your family and business are key to ensure some level of organization during chaos that is a storm event. Consider discussing an evacuation route, a rendezvous in case of separation, creating and updating an emergency preparedness kit. All can be crucial for survival.

Check out our 8 tips on how you can prepare NOW for a storm here.

Fireproofing your home

7/7/2022 (Permalink)

Photo courtesy of On Scene 242 photography Pictured is a home on fire in Bristol, WI

After celebrating the United States of America’s 245th birthday earlier this week you may have heard about multiple fires that started on garages, homes, or just outside of homes and commercial properties. Fire damage is nothing to scoff at and in the beautiful summer months the last thing you want to have to worry about is fire damage. With summer months bringing some heat, at times we can go for stretches without rain here in SE Wisconsin. In fact, drought.gov released a drought monitor on July 5th of this year stating that the areas of SE Wisconsin and NE Illinois are experiencing abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions.

Experiencing abnormally dry weather increases the risk of fire tremendously. drought.gov lists that one of the risks of a moderate drought is a “high fire risk”.

Believe it or not, of the deadliest fires in US history happened on Wisconsin soil. In Peshtigo, WI on October 8, 1871, the same day as the Great Chicago Fire, a fire rampaged through the area taking the lives of approximately 1,152 people.

All that being said, here at SERVPRO we want to give you a few tips to fireproof your home or property.

  1. Getting rid of dead vegetation

Although the spring and summer months in Wisconsin seem to pass by bringing a cold winter, most of us enjoy landscaping and making our yard look nice while we are graced with warm weather. But, it’s important that during this time that you ensure that no dead or dry vegetation is on your property. Dead and dry vegetation like pine needles, dried leaves, dead shrubs pose a great fire risk.

  1. Keep your gutters clean

Climbing a ladder and cleaning out your gutters during the spring months isn’t something that is very enjoyable but is very important. It’s not only important because the dry leaves and debris that accumulate pose a fire risk, but because it can also cause improper drainage when It does rain. This can cause interior and exterior water damage as well.

  1. Ensure all smoke detectors are working

Finally, one of the most important things is to install or make sure all smoke detectors are working in your home. With most fires happening at night, having a smoke detector is lifesaving. Regular maintenance on all alarms/detectors is one of the most important things you can do it prevent or be notified of a fire in your home. Consider looking into smart detectors as well which will also notify you with a notification on your phone.  Also consider installing these smart detectors in each room in your home for maximum fire detection.

Here at SERVPRO of South Kenosha County we are equipped and ready to take care of fire damage. You can find out more about how we deal with fire damage here. Fires in a home or property are stressful and something that no one should have to go through, but if you find yourself in the situation where your home or property has fire damage we will promptly be at your side to assist you in making it “Like it never even happened”.

The Leading Causes of Home Fires

6/23/2022 (Permalink)

Fires begin due to several causes. Anytime heat sources are used or misused, there is a rusk of an errant flame taking off.

Despite all the advertising and education that has gone into a home fire safety and prevention, fires in the home still account for a quarter of all reported fires in the United States each year.

Let’s investigate this. What is behind all these home fires? How many of these fires could be prevented?

Cooking. The overwhelming leader in home fires is cooking. Some cooking fires are avoidable, most are! The top cause of cooking fires? Unattended cooking. Taken into actionable steps, that means that the number one thing you can do to make your house safer from fire is to be more careful when you cook, and never leave your stovetop or grill alone.

Heating equipment. Heating equipment causes the second highest number of home fires. While some of it is caused by equipment failure, much of this cause comes in the form of portable space heaters, which are prone to tipping over, overheating, or overloading circuits. And of course, any heater is capable of setting fire to objects of materials that sit closer than three feet away.

Electrical fires. Some electrical fires hide behind your walls and are difficult to catch. But routine maintenance and inspection can reveal problems present and forthcoming, so can responsibly use of extension cords, lighting, and wattage limitations.

Intentional fires. It is unnerving to think about it, but a surprising 28,000 intentional home fires are started each year. This does not include fires started for a regular purpose that get out of hand, only fires started with the intent of burning a piece of property.

Smoking materials. Fires caused by smoking materials make up only 5% of home fires, but they make up more than a quarter of all home fire deaths. Smoking fires often happen because cigarettes are dropped or remain lit as individuals lie in bed, creating both fire and carbon monoxide hazards.

Regardless of the cause, SERVPRO of South Kenosha County is here for you if your home is affected by fire. Call 262-332-7044, we are here to help!

Extension Cord Safety

6/22/2022 (Permalink)

extension cord Choosing the right extension cord is very important.

Why choosing the right extension cord is important?

Extension cords are a common and convenient way to bring power to electrical devices when outlets are not nearby. However, when used without proper care and caution, they can become fire hazards and pose serious risks to your safety.

Follow these tips below to help keep your home safe when using extension cords:

Selecting extension cords

  • Only buy cords that have been approved by an independent testing laboratory.
  • For outdoor projects, use only extension cords marked for outdoor use.
  • Read instructions for information about the cord’s correct use and the amount of power it draws.
  • Select cords that are rated to handle the correct wattage of the devices with which they will be used.
  • Consider the length you will need; longer cords cannot handle as much current as shorter cords of the same gauge.
  • Choose cords with polarized or three prong plugs.
  • For use with larger appliances, choose thick, round low gauge extension cords. For smaller appliances and electronics, you can use thin or flat cords.

Using extension cords

  • Never remove an extension cord’s grounding pin to fit it into a two-prong outlet.
  • Avoid powering multiple appliances with one cord.
  • Neve ruse indoor extension cords, outdoors.
  • Don’t plug more than one cord together.
  • Don’t bend or coil cords when they are in use.
  • Cover cord receptacles with childproof covers when not in use.
  • Never use extension cords that feel hot to the touch.

Caring for extension cords

  • Always store cords inside where they can remain dry.
  • Unplug extension cords that are not in use.
  • Throw away damaged cords immediately.
  • Pull the plug, not the cord, when disconnecting from the outlet.
  • Remember, extension cords are intended to be temporary wiring solutions. If you find you are using them on a permanent basis, this can create an unnecessary risk in your home.

Can Air Purifiers Eliminate Mold Spores?

6/22/2022 (Permalink)

air purifier Air Purifiers are very effective.

Here Is What You Need to Know About Air Purifiers

If you’re looking for simple ways to combat mold damage in your home, you may have considered using an air filtration system at some point. Before you make a purchase, it’s important to determine whether using this unit in your home is an effective solution for eliminating mold. Here is what you need to know about air purifiers and their ability to remove mold spores form your living space.

How Air Purifiers Work

To measure the effectiveness of air purifiers, it’s helpful to know exactly how they work. A typical air purifier uses a High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filter to remove mold from your living space. These filters isolate airborne particles of mold and trap them inside the filter, preventing them from causing damage to your home. To get the most out of your purifier, be sure to place it in an area of your home where mold is often found. This can include:

  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Basements
  • Rooms that contain upholstered furniture

Installing your air filtration system in any part of your home that has been impacted by mold damage can ensure that the purifier does its job effectively.

The Effectiveness of Air Purifiers

While your air purifier can help to control a mold problem in the short term, it isn’t an appropriate solution for eliminating mold spores permanently. If you wish to get to the root of your mold problem, it is best to contact a professional. Trusting experts to remove mold from your home can help assure you that your living space is free of damage.

Air purifiers can be effective units to install in your Kenosha home. However, you shouldn’t rely on air filtration systems alone to remove mold from your living space. Trust mold remediation services to help your home return to normal so that it can remain free of mold damage.

Types of Flood Water Contaminants

6/8/2022 (Permalink)

What Type Of Water Is Flooding In Your Home

While all types of floods are capable of inflicting massive amounts of water damage on your property, some are just inherently more dangerous than others. Floods are classified according to one of three categories, depending on which types of contaminants are present in the water. Read on to see which type of water is flooding your home.

  1. Category 1: Clean Water Floods
Much like the name implies, Category 1 floods are characterized by an absence of contaminants. It is possible for these types of floods to transform into more dangerous varieties if outside contaminants are introduced to the water. Clean water floods are typically caused by:
  • Supply line bursts
  • Leaky pipes
  • Rainwater or snow melt
  1. Category 2: Gray Water Floods
Category 2 floods do contain mild amounts of contamination, but not enough to be considered a biohazard. If left untreated for 48 hours, a Category 2 flood can quickly become a Category 3. Gray water floods are usually a result of:
  • Sump pump failures
  • Malfunctioning household appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines
  • Broken aquariums
  1. Category 3: Black Water Floods
Category 3 floods are the most dangerous types of floods. They're categorized by the presence of human/animal fecal matter, raw sewage, dangerous chemicals, and other types of biohazards. These floods are extremely dangerous and can inflict massive amounts of water damage, so you should never attempt to remediate them on your own. They're often caused by:
  • Toilet back flow
  • Sewage overflow
  • Rising groundwater
  • Overflowing banks from rivers or streams

It's important to take all types of water damage seriously, but you need to be especially careful of damage caused by black water floods. If not treated properly, the situation will only get worse. It's best to contact flood remediation experts if your property has been affected by Category 3 flooding.

Do Carpeted Floors Increase the Urgency of Water Cleanup for you Office?

6/6/2022 (Permalink)

SERVPRO logo SERVPRO of South Kenosha responds quickly to water damage to help prevent more damage.

Water damage can happen at any time: day or night. Timing can complicate your decision on handling the damage, because it could be right before a busy day, or at the end of the day. Water damage can take some time to restore, so you may decide to wait until its more convenient.  It is not ideal to wait when it comes to water damage.

Carpet, for example, can absorb water quickly, and when left wet over extended periods, structural damages occur that lead to the disintegration of their layered construction. By waiting, carpeting that could have been restored, may have to be disregarded. Our water restoration technicians have experience handling carpets and understand the details of water damage to carpeting.

Carpeting is made of various materials including fibers like nylon, wool, polypropylene, or polyester. The primary backing is made from thermoplastic or latex adhesive, while the secondary backing is made from jute or polypropylene. This layered construction is one of the reasons you should not delay water damage restoration in your office. When exposed to moisture for a prolonged period, the adhesives holding the primary fibers deteriorate, leading to irreversible damage, such as delaminating. Stains and foul odors also develop.

When you call SERVPRO of South Kenosha County, we are ready to respond. We offer emergency services 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, even on holidays.

Call us at (262) 332-7044 and we will come up with a plan that minimalizes the impact to your business’s busy schedule.

What is Hiding in your Ducts?

2/21/2022 (Permalink)

dirty duct Keeping your ductwork clean is vital

Since the ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold and irrigating dust throughout your building, office, or home.

A routine part of a SERVPRO Franchise Professional’s service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC system and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may save your money. Apart from helping financially, a clean HVAC system will also permit your home’s air quality to remain in immaculate condition.

Fire Safety During Winter Storms

2/9/2022 (Permalink)

Winter Storms can happen almost anywhere. They can cause problems. Know what to do before and after a storm. This will help keep you and your family safe from a winter fire.

  • Test all smoke alarms. Do this at least once a month. This way you will know they are working. Install carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Test the alarms.
  • Plan two ways out of your home in case of an emergency. Clear the driveway and from walkway of any ice or snow. This will provide easy access to your home.
  • Make sure your house number can be seen from the street. That way if you need help, firefighters will be able to find you.
  • Be ready in case your power goes out. Have flashlights on hand. Also, have battery-powered lighting and fresh batteries. Never use candles!
  • Stay aware of winter weather. Listen to the television or radio updates.
  • Check on your neighbors and check on others who may need help.
  • Generators should be used outdoors. Keep them away from windows and doors. Do not run a generator inside your garage, even if the door is open.
  • Stay away from downed wires. Report any downed wires to authorities.
  • Be ready if the heat stops working. Use extra layers of clothes and blankets to stay warm. If you use an emergency heat source, keep anything that can burn at least 3 feet away.
  • Turn portable heaters off when you leave the room and turn them off when you go to bed.

IMPORTANT REMINDER:  There are more home fires in winter than in any other season. Half of all home heating fires happen in December, January, and February.

SERVPRO South Kenosha County is always here to help and answer any questions you may have.

When Does Your Insurance Cover a Flood?

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

man in a call center Make sure your flood insurance is up to date.

Experiencing a disaster at home can be devastating. Flooding is one of the most common and damaging incidents that homeowners come across. There are some cases where your homeowner’s insurance will cover the damage of a basement flood and other water damage. Other situations require that you turn to secondary flood insurance to file a claim.

What Your Homeowner’s Insurance Covers

You purchase homeowner’s insurance to help you when an accidental damage occurs on your home and property. This applies to a flooded house as well. If there is sudden, unintentional water damage, your insurance should step in and help with repair and replacement costs. Some examples include:

  • A broken pipe
  • A failed appliance such as a dishwasher or water heater that expels water onto the floors or walls
  • A leaky roof that lets rainwater into the attic

What Your Homeowner’s Policy Doesn’t Cover

Traditional insurance coverage won’t take care of all your water damage. If you fail to properly maintain appliances and other systems in your home, the insurance company won’t likely pay to repair the damage. If you intentionally cause flooding on your property, it will void any insurance protection, and you may face legal issues. Also, your policy will not cover the cause of the water damage, just the results. For example, if your refrigerator breaks and leaks water down the wall, ruining the drywall, your insurance will pay to replace the wall but not the fridge.

When To Get Flood Insurance

You can get supplemental flood coverage to take care of water damage from issues such as sewer backups or main water line breaks. If you live in an area where a basement flood would be common because of severe storms or overflowing rivers or canals, you should consider purchasing flood insurance.

When you’ve got a basement flood or other damage, its nice to know you can call a professional flood remediation team. SERVPRO OF SOUTH KENOSHA is always here to help. Give us a call 262-332-7044.

What Do Noisy Pipes Mean?

11/18/2021 (Permalink)

Are noises coming from your pipes? What does it mean?

Every home is vulnerable to a pipe break or a pipe burst, especially in the annual freeze-thaw that South Kenosha, WI sees every year. Sometimes you might hear mysterious noises coming from your pipes such as: Banging, Humming, Gurgling, Whistling, or Rattling.

But what do these noises mean, and should you be worried? It is always a good idea to call your local plumbing and water damage experts, but here are a few clues to what these sounds might be signaling.

  1. Water Pressure Problems

If you hear banging or humming noises, it is likely that there is an issue with your water pressure. To prevent a pipe leak, call in professionals to determine whether your water pressure is too high. It is always smarter to prevent a pipe burst in the first place than to fix broken pipelines after the face.

 2. Blockages and Back-ups

Banging or gurgling may indicate an obstruction in your water lines that is getting in the way of the water flow. If left unattended, these blockages can lead to major problems in the future, so if you hear these sounds coming from your pipes, you’ll be thanking yourself soon for calling in professionals sooner rather than later.

 3. Loose Components

Whistling, rattling, and squealing noises can all come from various parts of the plumbing system coming loose and shaking around. It could be the large metal contraptions holding the pipes up, or the tiniest washer or valve wiggling loose, but ay flaw in the water line can cause water damage disaster. Many of these potentially moving parts are probably hidden in your home, so you’ll need a professional to come in and give you a diagnosis. Just remember, time is of the essence when it comes to a pipe break just waiting to happen.

Properly functioning pipes don’t make much noise at all, so if you hear anything unusual, just ask for help. SERVPRO of South Kenosha County is always a phone call away. 262-332-7044.

Preparing For Fall Storms

11/4/2021 (Permalink)

Getting your home ready for cooler temperatures and stormy weather for fall is wise, whether you are a homeowner, a business owner, or both. Weather may be unpredictable during the fall in Kenosha, Wisconsin, but you won’t have to worry about it if you start to prepare now. Here at SERVPRO of South Kenosha County, we have some preparation suggestions for you to consider:

  • Remove dead leaves and debris form your gutters and drainpipes. This will prevent clogging during the wet weather. Drain all outdoor faucets ahead of freezing weather as soon as possible.
  • While late summer is not the time to heavily prune trees and bushes, it is a good time to remove any branches that are dead or look like they could become dangerous during a fall storm. If you have a tree that you think may be dead or dying, contact an arborist to come and look at it. If it is dead and near your home, you will want to have it removed before anything happens during a storm.
  • Examine all your windows and doors for cracks. If you find any, have them sealed so that you can stay warm and save energy this winter. You’ll be saving both time and money!
  • A roof inspection ahead of cold weather will tell you if your roof needs any attention before any fall storms. Loose shingles can be replaced more easily when its warm and dry outside. If you have siding on your home, look it over for any loose sections; fall storms bring wind that can create problems.
  • Make sure your entry walkways are in good shape with out any buckling or crumbling. When the surround ground is wet it can compromise cement, causing it to crack and split.

If you need help with preparing your home for storm season, you can give us a call. We have the experience and skills needed to take care of your property to keep them safe. We can get your home or business Certified: SERVPRO Cleaned, too! 262-332-7044.

How to Clean your Gas Range

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

A gas range is the preferred appliance of cooks because it provides a more uniform cooking method than an electric range. A bonus is the fact that it heats up immediately. The disadvantage of a gas stove is that it is more complicated to clean. Dried food should be cleaned up quickly before they create a smoke smell. You can become a pro at cleaning your stove by following a few simple instructions.

You just need a few simple materials to conduct a thorough range cleaning. Just grab dish soap, white vinegar, paper towels, and a clean scrub brush or a toothbrush.

To clean the stove, fill the kitchen sink with HOT, sudsy water using a few drops of dish soap. Remove the grates and burner caps from the gas range and soak them in the water. After they have soaked a bit, scrub them with a toothbrush to remove any stubborn debris. Brush loose crumbs off the stovetop with a paper towel and spray the entire area with a solution of one part vinegar to one part water. Let It sit for a couple minutes. Wipe the area with clean paper towels. Make sure you clean the knobs and the back panel also. If dried bits of food or debris remain, squirt a drop of soap onto the toothbrush and give it a good scrub. Wipe the area dry with paper towels. Remove the burner caps and scrub them with sudsy water. Dry them completely.

Once you have cleaned up all the crumbs and debris, put all the parts back together. Repeat this routine every month to maintain a clean, shiny stove. If you ever suspect smoke or fire damage, call SERVPRO of South Kenosha County to conduct a fire damage assessment.

Reasons for Noisy Pipes

9/21/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage is a common concern for homeowners because of the rapid and costly damage that ensures from a pipe break or other water issue. With the fear of repairs lurking in their minds, many homeowners worry when they hear strange noises coming from the pipes. While some concern is normal, most noises stem from three fixable problems.

1. Loose Connections

The primary cause of whistling from faucets is not a pipe burst. Instead, the likely culprit is a loose or worn-out washer. You can often correct the problem by tightening the little screw in the handle of the faucet. However, if the noise is coming from multiple sinks and it does not matter which faucet is open, you may want to call a plumbing specialist in Kenosha, WI to take a look.

2. Faulty Ballcock

If you hear a rushing or hissing sound, do not immediately bring the alarm for a pipe break. Many hissing sounds stem from toilet appliances. The most likely cause is a loose or old ballcock in the toilet tank. If you replace the mechanism in the tank, the problem noise should correct itself. If the noise persists, it can speak to another problem deeper in the system, so you would likely want to have it assessed.

3. Rapid Cutoffs

There is one noise that could suggest you need to fix the broken pipe or resolve the problem quickly. If you hear hammering or banging when turning on or off the water supply, you have a rapid shutoff occurring in the system. The constant banging can cause loose connections or leaks if left unresolved. While homeowners worry about a pipe break or sudden water damage, there is often little to fear from the noises in your pipes. Sounds only indicate that something requires your attention. but that doesn't always equate to costly and time-consuming repairs.

If you have encountered a broken pipe you should fix it right away. If you need any help, give us a call 262-332-7044.

Trust SERVPROXIDE to Disinfect Your Commercial Space

8/26/2021 (Permalink)

One of our products SERVPROXIDE is our proprietary hospital grade disinfectant registered with the EPA. It is a stabilized chlorine dioxide-based antimicrobial which carries the EPA’s lowest toxicity rating. The product itself doesn’t carry any fragrance other than a mild cleaning odor which dissipates quickly making it a great product for people with chemical or odor sensitivities.

There are many different applications for SERVPROXIDE. It can eliminate odors through disinfecting and oxidation rather than just covering them up. That can be done by applying the product directly with towels or through misting or spraying which is often used when we clean HVAC systems. It has even been utilized in electrostatic spraying for an even application on surfaces inside buildings.

In fact, SERVPROXIDE is the disinfectant we have used when we have been asked to clean and disinfect COVID-19 in homes and businesses here in South Kenosha and throughout Kenosha Counties.

The CDC recommends the usage of labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar types of organisms to COVID-19 and SERVPROXIDE has EPA-approved claims against things like Feline coronavirus, Canine coronavirus, staphylococcus, E. coli, Salmonella, Rotavirus, and Swine flu.

When you use SERVPRO South Kenosha, you can have a piece of mind knowing that our team is using hospital-grade disinfectant with the EPA. Our chemists are even able to advise us in unorthodox situations to utilize our suite of cleaning products to clean and deodorize even the strongest and strangest combination of smells and soils.

How to Find a Water Leak in Your Bathroom

8/24/2021 (Permalink)

Do you know the signs of a water leak at home? There are more signs of possible issues than you might think, and some of them show up long before you might notice water pouring from your sink or appliance.

While sometimes an issue with a leak is obvious and can cause major problems, its easier to miss some of the other signs. But if you know what you should be looking for, they’re much easier to find.

Leak claims are among the millions of water damage claims that are filed every year. On average, about one out of 50 American homeowners file a water damage claim every year.

Spotting a Hidden Leak:

Here is what to look for when searching for a water leak in your bathroom:

Water spots on the wall. These can be damp spots or stains.

Several spots with low water pressure. If you think your showers or sinks are showing lower water pressure than normal, you may have a hidden leak somewhere in your plumbing system.

Unusual odors or smells. Musty smells can be a sign of mold in your home. Mold and mildew can start to damage your home within just a few days. Many people notice the smell before they find other issues.

Slow-draining showers, sinks or tubs. If it’s taking too long for the water to drain, that’s a sign there could be a leak somewhere in your pipes. It’s always worth checking out.

Higher than normal water bills. Before you smell or see anything, you might notice your water bills going up if you have a leak. A good way to watch that is to notice your average monthly water bill and take note of anything that deviates from that.

If you have water damage and/or mold in your bathroom or other rooms in your home, we have the restoration and remediation services you need. Contact us at any time to learn more.

Hail Storm

8/3/2021 (Permalink)

A roof with hail damage A roof with hail damage

Even the smallest hailstorm can cause significant damage. The impact from hail can cause denting, cracking, and breaking of a multitude of surfaces. If a home is older or poorly maintained, the damage from a hailstorm may be more severe. Hail can cause damage to both the interior of your home and the exterior of your home, as well as any exterior attachments.

Exterior Damage – The roof takes most of the hit and depending on the material of the roof it could crack, split, peel, chip, or dent. In some cases, windows could break, and if there is a skylight there is a higher risk of them breaking too. Aluminum and wood siding may be dented by side-swept hail. Vinyl siding has an increased risk of breaking under heavy hail impact.

Interior Damage – Depending on the condition of the structure, hail could melt and cause damage to the interior. If you start to see dripping or dark spots in the ceiling drywall, you should look up in the attic to check the insulation to make sure its not wet and causing more damage. Then you should look around in your attic and find the location where the water is coming in, so you can tell a roofing contractor. If the hail breaks any windows or skylights, rain and hail can get inside and cause significant damage.

Exterior Attachments – Hail can cause damage to air conditioning units, satellite dishes, antennas, and other attachments on the outside of a home.

If your home sustains interior water damage from a hailstorm, rapid response and drying is important. Give the professionals at SERVPRO South Kenosha a call anytime.

Getting Rid of Mildew Odor After Flooding: Here's How

7/7/2021 (Permalink)

Your home is decontaminated, your contents clean and your life getting back to normal after flooding. You are finally able to take a deep breath, but when you do, you notice that something smells off. You take a whiff just to make sure, and yes, there is that smell again—the smell of mold and mildew. Despite your cleanup efforts, your home still has that telltale sign that a flood recently invaded your home. If you are tired of dealing with the aftereffects of a flood, there are a few things you should and should not do for odor removal from flooding. Here are a few things you should NOT do:

• Ignore the smell
• Think that bleach alone will kill the odor
• Cover the odor up with other scents
• Close the doors and windows.

Doing either of these things can put your home and your family at risk. Instead, do the following:

Contact a Professional

A professional flood remediation expert in South Kenosha, is the only person who can really help you kill post-flooding odors. This is because such an expert combats the source of the odor and not just the odor itself.

Act in the Meantime

In the meantime, there are steps you can take for odor removal from flooding on your own. First and foremost, open the windows. Doing so will help air out your home and provide for better circulation.

Next, remove any furniture that smells of mold and mildew. Whether or not the furniture is salvageable can be determined later. For now, your goal is to remove the odor, and any affected furniture is allowing that odor to remain in your house.

Finally, wash items that can be laundered. These include clothing, bedding, and draperies.

Once our team arrives to begin odor removal from flooding, it can begin to tackle the heart of the issue. This may include drying out and deep cleaning your carpets, performing flood cuts on affected drywall and deep cleaning furniture.

Tips to Prevent Dryer Fires in Your South Kenosha County Home

7/6/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know that dryer vent fires are the second leading cause of residential fires in the nation? If you are not regularly servicing your dryer, you run the risk of falling victim to a dryer vent fire. Here are some things to keep in mind to ensure that your dryer keeps the heat inside:

  1. Use a professional installer.
  2. Regularly service the equipment.
  3. Keep the surrounding area free of flammable materials.
  4. Clean the lint filter before and after each load of laundry.
  5. Use only rigid or flexible metal venting material.
  6. Ensure air exhaust vent pipe is unrestricted.
  7. Do not overload.
  8. Inspect gas lines.
  9. Use the correct plug and outlet.
  10. Never run the dryer when you leave home or are sleeping.

While these steps are simple and easy to carry out, they are also crucial in preventing a dryer fire. If you find yourself dealing with the heat outside of the dryer, call SERVPRO South Kenosha County 262-332-7044 for our fire and smoke damage restoration services. We are always here to help!

5 Things to Try When Your Smoke Alarm Beeps

6/24/2021 (Permalink)

Installing a fire alarm in each room of your home is very important. The worst thing about them is, when one of the alarms starts beeping. It can take a while to figure out which one is beeping. Then, how do you make it stop? Here are five things to try.

  1. Change the Batteries. Start simple and change the batteries. Even if you just did it, it is possible one of them is faulty or you accidentally mixed up an old one with a new one.
  1. Use the Silent Button. Your fire alarm has a test/silent button. Try to use that to stop the beeping. This is probably also a good time to find the manual (or look it up online if it was thrown away) for ways to specifically test your brand of alarm.
  1. Reset the Alarm. A slightly more complicated solution is to reset the whole device. Again, the manual or YouTube can provide help for how to conduct a full alarm reset. Do not get discouraged here, decide that it is not worth the effort, and leave the alarm unarmed. Fire damage occurs when you least expect it, so it is important to keep all your detectors up and running.
  1. Check for Dust. Some detectors are hardwired to your electrical system instead of using batteries. If dust is affecting the wiring, that could be a reason that your alarm is beeping. Use a keyboard air blower to clear out the dust build-up.
  1. Replace the Whole Thing. When no other solution will stop the beeping, it is time to replace the detector. They do not last forever, and chances are that it’s been longer than you realize since you installed your fire alarm. Don’t put this off. The safety of your family could depend on functioning smoke detectors.

Troubleshooting your smoke detector can be a headache, but its worth the effort to keep your family safe from fire and smoke damage. If a fire does occur, a fire damage assessment will help determine the cause.

5 Things to Do After A House Fire

6/23/2021 (Permalink)

A fire occurring in your house can be both surprising, overwhelming, and confusing. One can easily feel confused about what it is that they should do after going through such an experience. However, reading up and learning about what it is that you can do after a house fire can make you better equipped with dealing with such a situation. So, in order to help you protect yourself and your property, here are 5 things that you can do after a house fire.

Call an Emergency Helpline

Of course, the first step in any emergency is to call an emergency helpline. However, you must first ensure that everyone within your house is outside first. The first responders will arrive at your home and will focus their attention on the safety of you and others who live in your house. After all of the house occupants are out of danger, they will then focus their energy on saving the structural integrity of your house.

Take Some Time

While the first respondents are working on dousing the flames, make sure to take time for yourself so that you can process the situation. Try to remind yourself and those who surround you that everything will be okay as spiraling will only make you feel more stressed and will not help the process go any faster. Be sure to take everything one step at a time so that you do not overwhelm yourself.

Contact Your Insurance Agency

After you have collected your thoughts, contact your insurance agency and ask for their timeline on securing your property, which includes the removal of any standing water as well as covering the doors and windows of your house. The entire process depends on the amount of damage your house has taken, both from the fire and the dousing. Your insurance will help in starting this process for you and will then authorize their company for restoration to secure your property.

Find A Safe Place

As your house, despite the ventilation holes, will now be filled with chemicals, which lowers the air quality drastically, to prevent any health issues, you must then find a safe place to stay for the time being. In fact, the restoration and recovery process can take several months to finish, which is why most people end up residing in a relative's house rather than a hotel. So, be sure to be monetarily prepared.

Secure Your House

If you are in a situation where the fire department tells you that your house is safe to live in, you will still have to take certain precautions, such as boarding up your house. This will prevent any outside impurities from entering your house.

All in all, knowing the steps that you must take after a house fire will not only help you but will also make you feel more at peace. So, if you ever do go through something like this, we hope that you do not, you will not feel confused rather you will, by default, go into autopilot and start taking the required steps.

Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder . . .

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Icicle formed on gutter of residential home Do you see the beauty in this icicle like I do?

Icicles are beautiful at first sight but beware of their power.  They can tear off gutters, loosen shingles, and cause water to back up in your house. The after effects of this happening include warped floors, sagging ceilings, soggy insulation in your attic, and a magnet for mold and mildew.

Tips to prevent and fix an ice dam:

  • Use heated cables along the roof’s edge
  • Blow in cold air to the underside of your roof
  • Rake off the snow with a long-handled aluminum roof rake
  • Ventilate eaves and ridges
  • Cap the hatch
  • Exhaust to the outside
  • Add insulation
  • Install sealed can lights
  • Flash around chimneys
  • Seal and insulate ducts
  • Caulk penetrations
  • Read the attached article for details
  • And lucky #13, call SERVPRO of South Kenosha County for additional tips.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

12/11/2020 (Permalink)

flyer of food drive Dropping off donation bins at participating locations - Lakeside Foods (Paddock Lake)

And just like that we’re on to the next holiday and it’s the end of 2020.

I want to take a moment to step back and thank all the local businesses who helped participate in our Thanksgiving Food Drive: Lakeside Foods in Paddock Lake and Sandlots of Salem in Salem.

All the non-perishable items collected were dropped off at a couple places who we knew needed to stock up. This year we donated to the Sharing Center, St. Vincent DePaul, and Westosha Lakes Church. As 2020 has taken a toll on most of us, it has also affected our community members as well. Many of us are very fortunate and can help give back. We were proud of the items collected and donated back into the community.

Everyone is just looking to have a blessed and beautiful holiday season. Although things may have looked different this year, we can still spread joy and cheer.

While we can’t connect like usual, don’t forget to call your loved ones and make someone smile. Life is too short to not call. Enjoy the moment this holiday season.

Storms, the never-ending season

10/27/2020 (Permalink)

Van on site with snow piles Our vans are ready to go anywhere, rain or snow.

Storms do not stop, they just come at us with a change of pace. We are getting to the point where we are switching from rain to snow. For most of us, we aren’t excited, but for some they are! Mother Nature is bringing on the colder weather, and we all know what comes with it. We are here for the good and the not so good times of winter: sledding, fires, hot coco, family time, and even frozen pipes, icy roads, and icy sidewalks. I know living in the Midwest we’ve prepared for that, but no one likes when it comes around for the first time each year.

So here we are, with our yearly reminders!

The three most common ways for pipes to freeze are quick drop in temperature, poor insulation, and or thermostats set too low. When the temperatures drop low, here is what to do for your home:

  • Make sure all outside house faucets are shut off.
  • Make sure you are keeping your home at a temperature no lower than 55° F
  • Make sure that all attic and crawl spaces are well insulated
  • Make sure you plumbing is insulated properly.

If you have a pipe that burst this winter season, SERVPRO of South Kenosha is available to help assist you at any time, 24/7. Please call us at (262) 332-7044

WOWZERS! Those storms really hit hard last week! Storms this bad don’t come often, but when they do, we want you to be prepared!

Have you made sure your insurance policy is up to date with full coverage for your needs? Are you under insured or not insured for sump pump coverage? Did you find this out after the storm tore through this town?

As we talk with our local insurance agents, we remind our agents the importance of this coverage. We have been around the block a few too many times. Our job is to see what is happening out in the field and relay that to the insurance agents to ensure we are both taking care of our clients. Sharing experiences, job photos, and damage cost, shows them why this really is important for both of our clients. It is a team effort for all of us to be taken care of. Give the professionals the chance to make sure things are done right.

Minor things that can assist in a storm event:

  • Keeping an eye out for your sump pump: during a storm, check on it every hour or so
    • Do not forget about your neighbors, especially if it is their second home
  • Check your gutters for clogged debris
  • Move contents to a higher location to prevent secondary damage
  • Consider a generator: this can be a tremendous asset if the power is out
  • Have a back up battery operated sump pump that can kick in when power goes out
  • Mop up standing water
  • Use a wet/dry vacuum if needed

Fourth of July – Independence Day

7/2/2020 (Permalink)

Grill on fire, firefighter on scene Firefighter on scene putting out a grill fire.

It is going to be a hot one this year! The Fourth of July is on a Saturday this year, which means a lot of people will be outside, grilling, and hanging out. As we get together with one another it is important to remember the safety of grilling. Check out below for some tip and tricks about your grill. Stay safe this weekend everyone!

General grilling tips:

  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Before you use your grill:

  • Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
  • Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
    • Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
    • If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
  • If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

  • As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
  • If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

On average, 8,900 home fires are started by grilling accidents each year. By utilizing these tips can help prevent a serious problem from happening on a memorable weekend.

Communication is Key We are in this together as a community!

I hope that you, your family, staff, and friends are all safe through this unprecedented pandemic. I know that the coronavirus has impacted all of us in some form and has affected the ways we operate our businesses. We are keeping you and all our first responders in our thoughts and prayers as we continue to watch these events unfold. I would normally wait to contact you until after an event such as this, but because of the type of business you have, I wanted to make sure you were informed on what can be done. SERVPRO is being called by numerous business owners and community leaders to perform necessary bioremediation services to clean, disinfect, and sanitize their facilities. Our cleanup procedures are in accordance with the CDC recommendations. The CDC recommends usage of a labeled hospital-grade disinfectant with claims against similar pathogens to the coronavirus. Multiple products in the SERVPRO product line meet this standard and carry the EPA-registered emerging pathogens claims. We are here and ready to aid you in your time of need, providing these services so your facility can be cleaned and ready for business to resume. We are in this with you. I’m here for you, so feel free to email, call or text me for more information. I am available 24 hours a day. Please continue to stay safe and maintain social distance as we all do our part to combat this and lessen the spread of this horrible virus. You are all in our prayers.

Water Damage Timeline

5/27/2020 (Permalink)

Loading up the Van for the Water Loss When we get a water loss, we load up the van and get to work. Time is of the essence.

Ever wonder what happens to everything in your home when you have a water loss? Check out this breakdown for the industry standard.

Within Minutes

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

48 Hours to 1 Week:

  • Mold and mildew may grow and spread.
  • Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp.
  • Metal begins to rust and corrode.
  • Furniture warps and shows signs of mold.
  • Paint begins to blister.
  • Wood flooring swells and warps.
  • Serious biohazard contamination is possible.

More Than 1 Week:

Containments are Important Too

5/19/2020 (Permalink)

Pressurized Containment This containment was build on an multiple unit fire job. Containments are for all types of losses: fire, water, mold, biohazard, etc.

At SERVPRO of South Kenosha County we strive to help keep your business running while we handle the disaster. It is a goal of our company to keep you the most operable while we do our job properly as well. One way to separate the noise and environment of the loss from your workplace production is to set up a containment. This contraption will keep that environment within limits or controlled by our set up. This photo is showing one of our finely built containments, by our highly trained crew. This is one of the first steps production makes when coming on scene. While the managers and leaders are off talking through the scope, the physical work begins. This is an important step to begin with. Almost all commercial losses will see some type of containment set up based on the building layout.

Area containment is very helpful in the loss process, what you can’t see, still exists. First and foremost it has the ability to prevent further damage to health and even property. Mitigating, or reducing the severity, by taking these steps truly play a huge part in getting the job done properly and efficiently.

If you have questions about containment or anything in general, call the office and ask for Marcella. (:

Who you gonna call….. GHOST…. Wait. SERVPRO of SOUTH KENOSHA COUNTY!

What are those Ghostbusters looking things on their backs?! Are they sucking up ghosts and spirits?

Silly customer, those are our HEPA vacuums! HEPA stands for (High-Efficiency Particulate Air). The main difference between a conventional vacuum and a HEPA vacuum is that the HEPA filters can capture extremely small, micron-sized particles. They can collect particles of 0.3 microns trapping 99.97% of particles that are airborne.

When would you see something like this in action?! We would use these on any kind of cleaning, demolition, and/or mold remediation jobs. These filters just help keep the air quality safe and helps to not release the particulates into the air.

Why SERVPRO of South Kenosha

1/14/2020 (Permalink)

Initial Inspection with Customers It's great to have all parties involved with the loss so we are all of the same page. We try our best to have minimal miscommunications.

Work Order Phases- Here is the breakdown of our protocol when a lead comes in.

Phase I: Initial inspection: Scope of work is generated. Conversation with all parties involved will be updated on what will need to happen in order to restore your property back to preloss condition. Once approved by the homeowner/business-owner, initial documents must be signed.  If you are filing an insurance claim the necessary approvals will need to be approved by your insurance carrier and then documented before mitigation can start. If you are not going through insurance, 50% down is required before mitigation can start. An agreed upon price will be discussed before down payment is required.

Phase II: Once approvals have been approved, the mitigation process will start. Based off the scope of work, services can include demolition, cleaning, pack-out, dumpster rental, pod rental, etc. Necessary drying equipment will be placed and monitored to ensure that the structure has met the recommended drying goals. Once drying goals have been met and the structure is dry, mitigation is complete. At this time any and all equipment will be removed from the property. Final documentation will need to be signed for the mitigation portion of this loss.

Phase III:  At this time, you may select a contractor of your choice to repair your property back to preloss condition. If you are inquiring to have SERVPRO of South Kenosha County do any repair work, an inspection and estimate will need to be scheduled, written, and submitted to all parties involved. No repairs will start until an agreed upon price is established with all parties. Once a contract is written and signed, 50% down payment will be collected before repairs can begin.

Sincerely, SERVPRO of South Kenosha County

Wisconsin Winters = Frozen Pipes

1/8/2020 (Permalink)

Equipment Coming out of the Truck Shown is our professional dehumidifier! These will help adsorb moisture out of the air.

This 2019-2020 winter has been an unpredictable one. Snow on Halloween, freezing temperatures one day and then 60° the next. Is the snow coming, or are we going to be snow free until spring?

Reasoning for pipes bursting or leaking is related to the pipes location and how they are insulated. Water pipes burst because the water inside them expands as it gets close to freezing, and this causes an increase in pressure inside the pipe. When the pressure gets too high for the metal or plastic pipe to contain, it ruptures. Leaving you with an unpleasant mess to handle.

Please call us at (262) 332-7044.

We are your one stop shop, give us a call to get you taken care of! ??

Paint Splatter? OH NO!

10/25/2019 (Permalink)

Paint Splatter All geared up in PPE, ready to remove paint!

Why choose SERVPRO of South Kenosha County?

We aren’t your typical Joes, we’re better! Handling anything that comes across the phone.

Well, we are more than just your average water, fire, and mold mitigators. This week we took on a project many wouldn’t think to call about. A homeowner called in and was looking to get paint splatters removed off a neighboring fence. This is a unique kind of call, but it is something that we can take care of. The proper removal of the paint is done by Soda Blasting! This is an abrasive blasting method used with Sodium Bicarbonate, otherwise known as Baking Soda!! The baking soda is applied at a high pressure to the surface of the material, in this case the fence. Due to the fence being stained wood, the finish did come off. This was established before we started the project. The homeowner is just excited to have his fence without white paint splatters. He is going to finalize the project by restaining the fence when he has time!

A huge positive about soda blasting is that it’s environmentally friendly and biodegradable. It is also non-toxic and water soluble. As you can see in the photo, there is a garden bed right below the fence. Happy to inform the customer that this will not damage their flowers, as it will not build up in the soil! This method can remove grease and paint up to 15 times quicker than industrial hydro-blasting.

As it is no surprise to me, at the end of it all the homeowner was extremely pleased with the final product. So appreciative of our crew rocking this job.

If you ever come across a situation like this, give us a call!    262-332-7044

Are your Gutters Prepped for the Rain?

10/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fall Chores Fall Chores- Make it fun, enjoy with your family!

It’s Fall Y’all!! Down here the leaves are slowly starting to change and fall off as we get into the colder days. We all know that Fall is extremely beautiful, but they leave such a mess behind! Not only do I have to rake the yard, but also break out the ladder to clean my gutters?! I know how much of a pain it can be, BUT it is extremely crucial in order to avoid damage to your home or roof.

I know when people tell you to clean your gutters, you roll your eyes and say that you’ll get around to it. Very common. This one to two-hour project has never been fun, BUT it could save you potentially thousands of dollars if it were to collapse and ruin your roof.

We all know that gutters are intended to collect rain and bring that away from the foundation. If there are too many leaves clogging up the line, it could cause overflow or other damage to your property. You don’t want to stress your roof with all that pressure.  Plus, with the amount of rain we have got in Southeastern Wisconsin, the ground is very saturated. With there being no where for the water to go, it may try to seep into the basement or crawl space.

SO… When you see the rain coming off the gutters instead of going down it, it’s a settle reminder to break out to ladder and check on those gutters!

If you do seem to have some water damage in your home, give SERVPRO of South Kenosha County a call to come out and moisture map to see where that water is located.

Happy Fall! Enjoy those Fall activities!

Give us a call, (262) 332-7077

HMMM… WHAT TO DO NEXT AFTER A LOSS

10/1/2019 (Permalink)

Rain, Rain, Go Away. In Southeastern Wisconsin we have received so much rain and have had so many mini storm events within our communities. BUT….

Does anyone else like to be organized like me!? I love having things planned out, so I feel ahead of the game. Nothing is worse than already feeling behind the 8-ball due to having an unexpected loss. Well today I’m going to give you some insight and share the process when you call us in. This helps give you, as a homeowner or business owner, a better understanding of the different phases we work through as we make progress.

Phase I: Initial inspection: Scope of work is generated. Conversation with all parties involved will be updated on what will need to happen in order to restore your property back to preloss condition. Saving 1904 Red Oak Hardwood Floors

Floor mat system in action, sucking out moisture of these beautiful Red Oak hardwood floors from 1904.

Drying out cupped hardwood floors!

The first thing when you make a call to SERVPRO South Kenosha County is for us to figure out what is going wrong at your property. BUT mainly.. the real question is, do you have anything valuable/treasured you are concerned about that has been affected in this loss.

We received a phone call last Monday from a gentleman who experienced a water loss in his 1904 country farmette home. The home has been updated but there are still a few originals within the house. This man’s main concern was his 1904 original ¼” red oak hardwood floors that were starting to cup. Confidently, I told him that we can help reverse the cupping in the hardwoods due to excess moisture tapped in there. He was ecstatic when he found out the news. Our job is to take care of the customer’s needs. OUR TEAM is here to HELP you along the journey many wish we weren’t on.

Drying out hardwood floors is only one of our many specialties. If you run into a loss and it affects something special to you or has great value, call SERVPRO of SOUTH KENOSHA COUNTY as we are always here to help restore your favorite items.

A Functioning Home

7/16/2019 (Permalink)

This is a function able kitchen, while getting dried out.

This homeowner realized she has an issue when her dishwasher started to leak causing damage around the cause of loss.

Our Production Manager, Eric, goes out and assesses our inspections. Initial findings:

“The dishwasher leaked and caused water damaged in the portion of the kitchen, living room and laundry room. There appears to be some growth in the kitchen and into the living room as well. There will be asbestos testing done before we start any removal of material. The plumber was onsite to disconnect the plumbing and we removed the sink base cabinet and added some temp framing. The plumber re-connected the plumbing, so the homeowner has a running sink. We removed the face of the cabinet and is onsite. The laundry room ceiling and insulation was affected. We will start the mitigation portion once the asbestos results come back. We’ll be removing cabinet, mil work, insulation drywall and flooring.”

We want to ensure that the CUSTOMER is being taken care of, but more importantly feeling like they can still manage to utilize their house when it’s under construction, sustaining our values of CUSTOMER SERVICE.

Happy Father's Day

6/13/2019 (Permalink)

Dads do a lot for their families and sometimes it goes unnoticed. This Father’s Day make the special man in your life feel taken care of.

This enjoyable weekend is a time to gather and appreciate the memories shared over time. A quality way to share time and memories is through cooking, baking, and grilling your signature dishes. While you’re enjoying the family & friends’ weekend with festivities and kids running around, please remember to stay safe throughout the busy day. Now that we’re embracing the summer weather with cookouts, we’re here to remind you of some tips to ensure your home and family’s safety:

If something does come up, call SERVPRO of South Kenosha County.

The Ones We've Lost

5/24/2019 (Permalink)

Memorial Day is very important to our country. We are so honored and grateful to have men and women serve our country. Memorial Day is celebrated to honor and remember all of the men and women who died fighting for our country and our freedom! Let’s not get confused though with Veterans’ Day. Veteran’s Day is for honoring men and women who have served in the US armed forces.

Did you know, that it is always celebrated on the last Monday of May and was started after the Civil War (1861-1865)

Flying flags half-staff, placing flowers, and attending parades is a great way to remember the soldiers that have lost their lives.

Please remember to THANK those who have supported us!

Fire Extinguishers in the Work Place

4/15/2019 (Permalink)

Fire extinguishers in the work place are required by law, but also an essential safety tool that could assist in a disaster, if it were to ever strike. Many don’t realize that there are many different types of office fire extinguishers depending on your office needs.

The amount and class of extinguishers you need with depend on the square foot of your office area and the types of material you have inside. The local fire marshal will stop in periodically to make sure your equipment is up to date and that you are enforcing all the fire codes.

I am going to break down the different types of fire extinguishers and the classes that each can put out.

CLASSES:

  • COMMON COMBUSTIBLES: Wood, Paper, Cloth, etc.
  • FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS AND GASES: Gasoline, Propane, and Solvents
  • LIVE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT: Computers, Fax, Machines
  • COMBUSTIBLE METALS: Magnesium, Lithium, Titanium
  • COOKING MEDIA: Cooking oils and Fats

Water Fire Extinguishers – Class A

Foam Fire Extinguishers- Class A & B

CO2 Fire Extinguishers- Class B & C

Powder Fire Extinguishers- Class A, B, & C

Wet Chemical Fire Extinguishers- Class K

Check out your office fire extinguisher and see if you are prepared if a disaster were to strike. Depending on the size of your business, ask you maintenance man, owner, or manager if your business is equipped.

Emergency tips for Fire/Smoke Damage

1/15/2019 (Permalink)

 DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change HVAC filter, but leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

DON’T:

  • Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
  • Attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.
  • Consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat, or water. (They may be contaminated.)
  • Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
  • Send garments to the dry cleaners. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

If you find yourself in a fire damage situation, give SERVPRO of South Kenosha County a call!

Related Fire Services

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of South Kenosha County have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition.

Have Questions About Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Today – (262) 332 7044

Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.

Step 1: Emergency Contact

The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.

Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment

We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action to ensure everyone’s safety.

Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service

Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.

Step 4: Water Removal and Dehumidification (if water damage is present)

The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process. Our main goal is to stabilize the environment to prevent secondary damage.

Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces & Address Damaged Contents

We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces. We would then address immediate attention to the contents within the residence that was affected. We would then pack out contents, generate a loss report, and handle textiles and electronics with specific care.

Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing/Deodorization

We clean and sanitize of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.

Step 7: Restoration

Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Summer Smells.. Cook Out Time

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

It looks tasty, remember to use precaution.

The weather is warming up in South Eastern Wisconsin, and you can mentally smell the BBQ food you’re eager to cook outside. Unfortunately, a grill fire can surprise you as something that wasn’t on the menu if you are ill-prepared. Before looking up new recipes or seasonings to try, it’s worth learning the basics of grill safety.

Preparation Is the Key to Prevention

After ensuring the grill’s footing is stable and removing low-hanging tree branches and other flammable items near the grill, it’s time to start your grill the safe and proper way:

• Gas grills: Check the connections on both ends of the gas tank to make sure they are tight. After securing the connectors, coat the hose with a 50/50 water and soap solution before turning the grill on while its lid is open. If you witness any bubbles on the soapy hose during this test, immediately turn off the grill and have it serviced because those leaks put you at risk for a grill fire.

  • Charcoal grills: A charcoal grill should be safely lit only with charcoal starter fluid or a charcoal chimney starter. Using other flammable liquids instead, a fire can get out of hand and cause flare-ups that can spread to your residence or cause BBQ smoke damage.

Meat Temperature Shouldn’t Be the Only Thing Monitored While Cooking

While cooking outside, exercise vigilance by following these tips to prevent a BBQ fire:

    • Supervise the grill until it is off
    • Turn the grill off if you suddenly smell gas
    •     Call emergency services if a gas smell doesn’t subside after turning the grill off
    •     Wear clothing that has no loose or hanging parts that could catch fire
  • Women make sure you tie your long hair back
  • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it

If Fire Spreads Despite Precaution

Following these tips, most accidents can be prevented. If a grill fire occurs and cannot be contained with an extinguisher, contact your local emergency number. If the fire damages your property, a professional fire restoration crew is worth considering to restore your home’s condition and remove any residual smoke smell and/or soot damage.

We will be able to deal with every aspect of your fire cleanup job after there has been a fire in the house or fire in the business. The process begins by using various types of industrial chemicals to clean all the surfaces that have been affected by fire damage, soot damage, and smoke damage.

We can handle commercial fire damage in addition to residential damage. The size of the property doesn't matter. We will put the processes in place to board up the property to protect it from intrusion, eliminate the smoke smell, and tackle every type of damage that has occurred.

The use of the proper tools, technique, and cleaning products will effectively address soot damage, as well as every other type of damage that has taken place.

If it is possible to salvage your property after residential or commercial fire damage, SERVPRO of South Kenosha County will help you to put this terrible time behind you.

Residential and commercial fire damage isn't easy to repair, but a professional service will be with you every step of the way to help you cope during this difficult time. You will be able to get back to a normal life once your cleanup and restoration is over.

Warmer Weather is Coming

2/16/2018 (Permalink)

As the temperatures increase as we get into the spring season, SERVPRO of South Kenosha County wants to ensure you’re doing all the right things to prevent your house from getting microbial growth. The source of mold growth is where there is moisture, warmth and “food” for mold spores to grow on.

How it Forms:

  • Mold spores tend to grow and reproduce in areas that are wet and damp
  • In just 24-48 hours, a moist environment shared with the room temperature conditions and an organic food source can lead to growth
  • Food source – wood, drywall, cotton, etc.
  • Mold loves dark spaces indoors

Causes:

  • Leaking pipes
  • Leaks in Rood
  • Condensation
  • Poor Ventilation
  • Wet Clothes

Dangers:

  • Your Health:
    • Allergic or irritant symptoms
    • Toxic symptoms
    • Infections

How to prevent:

  • Keeping the moisture in your home low
  • If you find any leaks from any source don’t delay fixing them!
  • Reduce the humidity
    • Air conditioners and dehumidifiers can reduce household humidity
  • Don’t let wet clothes sit and pile up

Does Your South Kenosha Home Have A Mold Problem?

1/18/2018 (Permalink)

In South Kenosha, mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Frozen Pipes?

12/20/2016 (Permalink)

It’s that time of year again and we want YOU to be ready this time around.

Please call us at (262) 332-7044.

Kenosha County Smoke and Soot Cleanup

12/5/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of South Kenosha County will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.
